It’s not easy talking about and supporting a tax increase. But Iroquois County Board member Jed Whitlow says a public safety tax “is needed,” and the county’s safety is too important not to support this.”

A referendum question in November will ask taxpayers their opinion on a quarter-cent sales tax that will find the revenues generated going toward public safety needs. The County Board directs the revenues to the needed areas.

It’s been pointed out, neighboring counties tax Iroquois County residents a public safety tax when they shop in those counties. This tax would impose the quarter-cent on certain items and tax visitors who spend money in this county too.

Whitlow points out, Iroquois County’s limited law enforcement personnel have 1,120 square miles to cover. Additional deputies will help patrol efforts and make it that much safer for all concerned.

A retired law enforcement officer, Whitlow said he’s aware of the financial restraints and that law enforcement is short-handed. He said county office-holders and the county board has stepped up and controlled spending. “Now, we need the extra help,” he said.
