An autopsy completed in McLean County (Wednesday) confirms the man found dead in Gilman Tuesday was the victim of hypothermia. 62-year-old Bruce Martell of Beaverville was discovered unresponsive in a business parking lot, just off Route 24.
Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said Martell had been staying at a nearby Gilman motel. A recent fire at Martell’s home in Beaverville chased from his residence.
Cheatum reported the death was due to exposure to the cold. It’s unclear why Martell had ventured out of his motel room. Officials are waiting on toxicology reports. There was no foul play.
