Iroquois County: Warning about phone/internet scams

They go in cycles; different parts of the state finding problems at different times. This time, it’s again happening in Iroquois County.

Sheriff’s Police report an up-tick in reports of phone scams. And police are again warning people about phone calls or internet attempts to access your information. Avoid the calls if you’re not familiar with the caller. And avoid opening computer links you’re unfamiliar with too.

Sheriff investigators say they’ve been averaging 5-6 consumer complaints per day about callers trying to gain info. Some callers ask you to send money via Western Union or to buy I-Tunes, claiming you have relatives in legal trouble and they need your help.

Warrants for your arrest and needed-payment for a utility bill are also common.

Law enforcement advises you hang up on such callers or don’t even answer the phone if you’re not sure who’s calling.
