There was a focus on traffic safety in Newton County, IN this week. The sheriff's department teamed with the State Police conducting a traffic blitz (Wednesday). Troopers directed attention to the the portable scales to check on the weight of semi-trucks using U-S. 41 and State Road 55. Police reported complaints of overweight trucks on the roadways.
The blitz resulted in findings that one truck driver was operating on a flat driver; another driver was found in possession of marijuana. Of the 20 trucks weighed, 10 were found to be overweight. Three drivers were placed out-of-service while two trucks were placed out-of-service. Twenty inspections resulted in 70 violations. Nine traffic citations and 13 warnings were issued.
