ISP releases updated info on officer involved shooting in Iroquois County

Illinois State Police (Monday) provided updated information concerning a deputy-involved shooting Sunday that left a suspect dead and an Indiana sheriff deputy critically wounded.  The State Police will continue the investigation before turning over their findings to the Iroquois County State's Attorney's Office.

State Police report the shooting incident occurred in Sheldon, just west of the Illinois-Indiana border.  State Police said the sequence of events started in Iroquois County. Iroquois County Sheriff’s deputies pursued a suspect who was reportedly armed and with a hostage. The chase crossed the border into Newton County, Indiana, and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit.

The chase crossed back into Illinois, State Police said, and the suspect crashed his vehicle in Sheldon.

After crashing, the suspect got out of the car and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. Both the suspect and Newton County Sheriff’s Corporal Brandon Schreiber were hit by gunfire.

The suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, was pronounced dead on the scene. No hostage was found in his car.

Corporal Schreiber, a five-year veteran of the department, meanwhile, is still in critical condition at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department asked Illinois State Police to assist in the investigation at 8:45 p.m. Sunday.
