Jerald Hoekstra ends 33 years at KCC trustee

                           Earns Certificate of Merit Award from ICCTA

Words of praise for Jerald Hoekstra, now retired from the Kankakee Community College Board of Trustees after 33 years. He joined the board in 1991and stepped aside last month (2024).  He was board chairman from 2014 to 2018. 

KCC’s president, Michael Boyd, says in a news release. "Jerald's dedication and leadership is nothing short of distinguished. In his leadership role during these 33 years, Mr. Hoekstra has experienced so many of our college’s significant historical events.”

During Hoekstra’s tenure, The KCC board approved and oversaw hiring three college presidents as well as construction and major renovations of six buildings. In addition to adding and changing facilities, KCC’s outdoors campus has undergone many changes. The college added four outdoor sculptures and wind power and solar installations.

“Mr. Hoekstra has supported so many of our college’s achievements, and he’s also helped us endure and persevere through the roughest of times such as a lengthy statewide budget impasse and global pandemic,” Boyd said. “His leadership leaves a lasting legacy on KCC’s strength and resilience as an institution.”

A reception to honor Hoekstra’s service to the college was held May 21 at KCC prior to his final meeting. 

“One of the best things about being on the KCC Board of Trustees is its commitment to the mission of the college,” said Hoekstra, who lives in St. Anne. . “This is a tremendous board and I’m humbled and appreciative of the community who supported me in continuing in the role for 33 years.”

ICCTA Award ---

The Illinois Community College Trustees Association has also recognized Hoekstra's years of dedicated service.  A Certificate of Merit Award celebrates individauls who have made significant contributions to the ICCTA.  It marks his lasting legacy of remarkable contributions.  Cathy Boicken, chairperson of the KCC Board of Trustees, offeres Jerald "congratulations for the dedication and well-deserved recognition for being so instrumental in guiding the college through such important milestone and challenges."  

Dr. Boyd adds, "this award certainly reflects his impact on the KCC mission and the community we serve."
