Juneteenth events provide history lessons

Libraries and civic groups are lending time to educate people what Juneteenth is all about today (6/19).  Millions of Americans have the day off, for a third straight year, for the federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.  This day of freedom looks back after the Civil War on June19, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger and his 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas proclaiming that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were free.

Several event organizers  claim there's a need to be educated what this day is all about.  The federal holiday finds municipal, state and federal government offices closed. There's no postal service today.  DMV's and banks are closed in observance of the holiday. Some libraries are closed while others remain open with regular hours to promote education.

Call ahead to make sure facilites are open.
