Call ahead if you’re venturing out to do business today. Many government offices are closed, some banks and service-offices may be closed to recognize Juneteenth….a national holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Some people refer to today as the 2nd Independance Day.
The Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 established that all enslaved people in Confederate states rebelling against the Union "shall be then, thensceforward, and forever free."
The holiday was first recognized in 2021. This year it's recognized on this Monday, June 19.
