Kankakee will share in a federal grant to clean-up industrial waste sites. Kankakee is one of seven Illinois communities to share $2.3 million of federal funding earmarked to "clean and redevelop" contaminated waste sites.
Kankakee received $400,000, the second-largest grant awarded.

Senator Dick Durbin announced the grants this week. He said the monies are for local, under-served and economically-disadvantaged areas.

Since 1995, more than 20,000 properties nationwide have been assessed and more than 850 of them have been cleaned through this program.
