Local government officials are working that financial-pencil in trying to figure how the current COVID-19 crisis is/may affect the working budget. Tax revenues play their role in available working cash flow and with the state and federal government granting extensions on payments due, the available cash flow just may not be there.
At Kankakee County’s Board meeting this week (Tues), Chairman Andy Wheeler reported the financial picture is in pretty good shape right now; cash flow showed $980,000 in reserves back in March of 2017. Today however, the county has $4,208,700 dollars in the bank. That, Wheeler said, might be adequate to offset any shortfalls in revenue.
The long-time picture might be a different story. The county checkbook appears OK now, but whether it’s good enuf for the setback the coronavirus setback could bring is in question. The future will be a daily watch-and-see.
