Kankakee County declares emergency declaration

Kankakee County Board Chairman Andy Wheeler signed an emergency disaster declaration this (Friday) morning. The disaster call is response to the over-abundant rainfall that’s affected the farming community and the overall economy.
Area county officials and others in the state have reported only about 20 percent of the corn crop has been planted and with crop insurance deadlines looming, the disaster declaration would hope to provide ag relief for the entire agricultural community.

Wheeler points to the fact that nearly 20 percent of Kankakee County's economy revolves around agriculture.

Wheeler said he signed an emergency disaster declaration in response to historic precipitation, the inability for farmers to get their crops planted, and the substantial impact to farm families. Again, he said, the entire county economy is affected.
The disaster declaration takes effect June 1 (Saturday) and can be renewed every seven days.
