The Kankakee County Health Department reported the first human case of the West Nile virus this year. The victim was a man in his 50s from Manteno. Last year, a total of 5 cases were reported.

The case was reported Friday.

The West Nile virus is spread to humans by mosquitoes and there are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent an infection. Approximately one in five people infected with West Nile will develop symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. People over the age of 50 or with certain medical conditions are at higher risk for serious illness.

A health department statement included a reminder to county residents that West Nile activity is widespread and advised residents to protect themselves against mosquitoes.
