An expected deficit of $4-million has Kankakee County officials talking more cuts. Following a meeting Tuesday afternoon, County Board Chairman Mike Bossert said he doesn’t know where it’ll end, but discussions will continue to find ways.
The Board is approving eliminating meeting per diems for board members. Bossert says it’s a just small step considering the big-picture, but something that has to be done.
Freezing salaries of elected officials and other department leaders has support from finance leaders. There was no support for cutting pay. Health care costs are a major issue. There was talk of eliminating health care coverage.
The county and city of Kankakee are dealing with the loss of millions of dollars in sales tax revenue from the revenue-sharing program ruled illegal earlier.
