Kankakee Fishing Derby Award Winners

The 39th annual Kankakee River Fishing Derby recognizes several top award-winners. The 10-day event wrapped up over the weekend. And the Northern Illinois Anglers Association, which sponsors the derby, held its annual awards ceremony (Wednesday) at the Bourbonnais Sportsmen’s Club.

13-year-old Brody Kelly of Bourbonnais was recognized as the Grand Champion. He reeled in a 4-pound, 7-ounce smallmouth bass. Officials said it was the largest smallmouth bass caught in the derby since 2004, according to NIAA president Ken Munjoy

Brody spent up to 10-hours a day fishing during the derby. Prize money included $200 for the best small smallmouth bass and $100 for the grand champion.

NIAA president Ken Munjoy said about 1,000 participants entered the competition. Nine “tagged” fish were caught. Area businesses sponsored the tagged fish, leading to cash prizes.
