Kankakee School District #111 needs to cut

Kankakee school district #111 officials are considering closing the Aroma Park Elementary school and eliminating six teaching positions as a move to save the district $3.5 million dollars.

The board is expected to vote on cuts and cost-reductions next month. The district is dealing with a $6 million deficit.

The proposed cuts were aired during a public budget forum at Lincoln Cultural Center Monday. Also presented was an online survey asking parents to rate what programs they value most about the district, including preschool, summer school, social workers and librarians.

The district hasn't had a balanced budget since 2012. In 2013, the state began scaling back what it gives Kankakee schools, which have lost $12 million since then.  State aid makes up more than 51 percent of the district's $64 million budget.
