The new school year means additional pedestrian and vehicle traffic in-and-around school zones. Police are reminding motorists about the need to be aware of excited children as the new year gets started.

There’s always the need to advise drivers about decreased speeds in school zones and the school bus law, regarding stops for loading and unloading passengers.

Police say motorists need to be on the lookout for children walking or riding their bikes to school, as well as ones who might dart from between parked cars. Allow extra time for the increased traffic in school zones during the morning or afternoon commute.

Motorists are reminded they are required to reduce their speed in school zones to a maximum of 20 miles-per-hour. The reduced speed limit is in effect from 7 am thru 4 pm on school days when children are present.
It’s also illegal to use electronic devices, including cell phones, when traveling through Illinois school zones.

And that school bus law requires motorists to stop when amber lights are flashing. Motorists who pass a stopped school bus which has its stop lights activated and loading/unloading arm extended could be fined $150 and have their driver’s license suspended for three months.
