The Kankakee County Sheriff's Department is clarifying an earlier report about an inmates' lawsuit on how booking procedures are conducted at the County Jail.
The sheriff's office actually was a winner in a federal lawsuit regarding strip-searches of all inmates as they are booked in at the corrections facility.
Under-Sheriff Mike Downey said its standard practice, under Corrections guidelines, to strip-search those detained. He said the practice falls within the standards of protocol. And the court agreed.
Federal judge Colin Bruce of the Central District of Illinois favored the county in his ruling that the jail strip searches are constitutional.
Sheriff Tim Bukowski said this ruling could have a significant impact on county jail operations across the state.
