Life sentence for Darius Sullivan in killing of Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and wounding of Sgt. Tyler Bailey

“This sentence is not enough justice,” Jim Rowe

Kankakee County Circuit Judge Kathy Bradshaw-Elliott told convicted cop-killer Darius Sullivan “you have no respect for human life.” And Tuesday, the judge sentenced Sullivan to life in prison for the 2021 shooting death of Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and for seriously wounding her then-partner, Officer Tyler Bailey.

Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe said this is far from the kind of justice Sullivan deserves….

"This defendant will die, alone, in a cold cell and even that is not enough justice," Rowe said.

The judge rendered her ruling, life for killing Sgt. Rittmanic along with a consecutive 80-years for the attempted murder of now-retired Sgt. Tyler Bailey.

The sentencing hearing included impact statements from Rittmanic’s wife and sister. Sullivan did not speak.

The defense team asked for the case to be appealed to Illinois’ Third Appellate Court.

The 28-year-old Sullivan and his girlfriend, Xandria Harris, were arrested for the crime. The officers were shot answering a call about barking dogs at a Bradley hotel property site near the Northfield Square Mall.

Sullivan was found guilty by a jury last September. Harris is still awaiting trial.
