Loda man dead after Jeep runs into Bayles Lake

Despite efforts by two passer-by individuals and emergency rescue workers, a Loda man died after his vehicle plunged into Bayles Lake at Loda Saturday.

68-year-old Stevie Chapman was pronounced dead at Gibson Area Hospital. Police said his Jeep ran into the lake after it veered out of control.  Champman was submerged inside the Jeep until the Loda Fire Department was able to reach him.

Iroquois County Sheriff's Police reported the incident happened around 11:30 in the morning. The sheriff's department, Loda and Buckley Fire personnel, and the Buckley and Gibson ambulance responders were all at the scene.

The sheriff's department reported Chapman's Jeep Wrangler was eastbound on County Road 200 N when it ran out of control. The driver was able to regain control before the Jeep ran into a ditch and then into Bayles Lake.  The Jeep became fully submerged while two passer-by witnesses tried to rescue the driver while fire personnel were enroute. Loda Fire retrieved the body.
