Man who left scene of accident found suffering from hypothermia

Reports of 10-plus police and fire departments assisted in searching for a man that left the scene of an accident in rural Dwight early Saturday. The man hasn’t been identified, but he was taken to a hospital after he was located near the closed-Dwight Correctional Center. Dwight Fire and EMS said he was suffering from hypothermia when found in a snowbank.

The Dwight Fire Department reported an emergency response to an accident site near the intersection of Verona Road and 3300 North Road around 2 a.m. The driver of the vehicle was gone. Crews began a ground search with officials saying weather conditions were below freezing and there was a very dense fog which made the search very difficult.

The Grundy County Sheriff's Department, Livingston County Sheriff's Office, the Pontiac Police Department Drone Unit and the Illinois State Police located the subject outside of the closed Dwight Correctional Center around 8:45 that same morning.

A local resident was able to assist with the use of a tractor to get emergency crews and equipment to the subject. Police officials have not released why the man had left the scene or what caused the accident.
