The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is urging Illinois lawmakers to include colorectal cancer funding in the state budget following Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposal.
The group is calling for $2 million to support colorectal and lung cancer screenings, aiming to expand early detection and patient navigation services statewide. Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In Illinois, an estimated 6,160 people are expected to be diagnosed in 2026, with about 2,080 deaths projected.
Health officials say the disease is highly preventable through routine screenings. Colonoscopies can reduce cases by 40% and lower mortality rates by 60%, making early detection a key strategy in reducing cancer-related deaths.
