Momence community mourns untimely death of student

Grief counselors are being made available in the Momence school district following the death of a 9th-grade student Thursday (1/25). District #1 Superintendent Shannon Anderson issued a statement confirming the passing of the student. He said this District is ‘deeply saddened to confirm the heartbreaking news.’ Sup’t Anderson said ‘our thoughts and condolences go out to family and friends affected by this tragic loss.’

The school district is prioritizing the well-being of students, staff and the broader school community. Mental health and counseling support will be available in all buildings in the coming days and weeks to assist those dealing with the emotional impact of this tragedy.

The Momence school statement further states, it’s deeply thankful to neighboring Districts and mental health and counseling providers that’s volunteered their services to assist the community.  The Momence District is requesting respect for the privacy and grieving process.

Update: The student's identity has been released and it is Amari Crite, a freshman basketball player who passed away after collapsing at Thursday's JV game. If anyone would like to help out the family, they do have a GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/laying-amari-to-rest?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer
