Momence police officers honored for bravery, courage and heroism in courthouse shooting

Momence Mayor Chuck Steele presented heroism awards to two Momence officers recognizing their bravery in the recent shooting incident last month outside the Kankakee County Courthouse.

Momence Police Chief Brian Brucato and Lt. Kenny Strunk were recognized and applauded (Tuesday evening) during the Momence City Council meeting. The Daily-Journal reports it was the officers’ bravery and quick action that resolved the hostile situation in which two men were shot and killed. It’s been pointed out, there could have so many more casualties had one of the gunmen not been taken into custody by the Momence officers, who reacted without fear.

Mayor Steele said the officers “put themselves in great danger and doing their jobs selflessly to apprehend the suspect and protect the public,.” according to the D-J report.

Officers Brucato and Strunk approached a gunman who was armed with an assault rifle. That gunman dropped the weapon and surrendered to the officers.
Mayor Steele and the City Council presented awards to the men recognizing their bravery, courage and heroism.

The D-J further stated that Momence Chief Brian Brucato has served as Momence Chief since 2017 and has been in law enforcement 21 years. Lt. Kenny Strunk is a 27-year law enforcement veteran and with the Momence department the last four years.
