White County (IN) sheriff's police and Indiana State Police are involved in an investigation of a police chase and crash that killed a mother and her newborn child. It happened Sunday night when deputies responded to a call about a drunk driver near Indiana Beach. The high-speed chase ended when a Springfield, IL driver crashed his vehicle into an abandoned house in Brookston (IN).
The names of the mother and baby are being withheld pending notification of family. The two were among six people in the vehicle. Police report another juenvile and toddler were air-lifted to regional hospitals.
Police report the vehicle's driver, 23-year-old Joshua Brown of Springfield (IL) travled across SR 18, crossed SR 43, then lost control, ran off the road and hit a tree before hitting the house. Brown and another passenger, 21-year-old Eric Stokes of Illinois, ran from police and were caught. Police believe Brown was high on acontrolled substance.
Felony charges include Neglect of a Dependent, Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving and Operating while Intoxicated -- causing death.
