New Gateway Sign Installed in East Kankakee

– Entering East Kankakee just got a little more attractive. The new gateway sign was installed this morning off Exit 312 at the I-57 interchange. The beautification project is a start to more development taking place on the East side of town after calls for investment. Public meetings were held to hear feedback from residents, as well as, videos and information being shared online.

“The City of Kankakee’s East side has succumbed to a lack of investment over decades. Residents have expressed concerns about the appearance to the entryway of our city and the administration has been responsive to those concerns. While we are starting with beautification, more investment is forthcoming. Investment in all wards throughout the city demonstrates our commitment to equity as we have an opportunity to rebuild from this pandemic and move Kankakee Forward,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

Construction on the gateway sign began last October and was funded primarily from a Special Service Area. The East side also benefits from a new East Court Street TIF district that is available to assist with funding future development.

“This new sign and accompanying landscaping will create a great first impression for visitors to Kankakee, and offer a bright ‘welcome home’ to local residents and businesses,” said Mike Hoffman, City planning consultant with Teska Associates, Inc.
