An Illinois native was elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church. Cardinal Robert Prevost, raised in Chicago and worked in the city for over a decade, has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV. Prevost was ordained a priest in 1982, having studied at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and receiving his masters degree. Two-thirds of the vote was required for the new pope to be elected, and it took just five votes to come to a decision.
A Mass of Celebration is being held today at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago.
