Newton County Sheriff's Police are praising two men for their alertness after they discovered a vehicle with a woman inside. The woman had been reported missing six days ago. She was OK and flown to a Chicago hospital.
Sheriff Shannon Cothran reported 41-year-old Brieonna Cassell of Wheatfield was the subject of missing person report over the last six days. She was conscious and speaking, having survived in the vehicle. A passerby located the vehicle off the roadway, out of view from any passing traffic, on County Road 600 S (about a mile southeast of the Newton County landfill).
That passerby, Johnny Martinez, was operating equipment for DeYoung Drainage when he noticed the vehicle. He contacted his supervisor, Jeremy Vanderwall, who happens to be the Morocco Fire Chief. The two men found Cassell to be the sole occupant.
Sheriff Cothran stated the Newton County Sheriff's Office is expressing a great deal of gratitude to Johnny Martinez and Chief Vanderwall for their actions.
Other agencies assisting included: Newton County 9-1-1 Communications, Newton County EMS, Lutheran Air Service, Brook, Morocco and Kentland Fire, and the Brook Police Department.
