Every October, communities nationwide observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). The movement began in the 1970s, when survivors and advocates came together to demand safety, resources, and recognition for those experiencing abuse. What started as grassroots organizing grew into a nationwide effort to educate the public, shift harmful norms, and build support systems for survivors. In 1989, October was officially designated by Congress as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, creating a national platform to honor victims and survivors and push for change in laws and community responses.
Each October, Harbor House joins this historic movement to shine a light on the realities of abuse, honor the courage of survivors, and recommit to building a future without violence. This year, our team is leading a full month of education, outreach, and community connection. From trainings and community presentations to fun events and online initiatives, every effort is rooted in one message: help is available, healing is possible, and together, we can end domestic violence.

The Purple Pledge --
Purple Thursday is a national day of action where people across the country wear purple to show support for survivors and raise awareness about domestic violence.
This year, take it one step further by signing the Purple Pledge. By pledging, you commit to supporting survivors, promoting healthy relationships, and standing against violence in all its forms.
Harbor House invites you, your workplace, your school, or your community group to participate by wearing purple, taking the pledge, and sharing your photos and commitment with us. Fill October with solidarity and shine a light on the importance of prevention and support.
Together, our voices and actions can make a powerful difference. Wear purple, take the pledge, and show your commitment to ending domestic violence.
