Oil Trains Facing New Safety Regulations

(Washington, DC) -- The mile-long trains that roll through Illinois carrying crude oil with growing frequency will operate under tougher new federal restrictions. The federal government today announced an accelerated phasing out of older tank cars and the use of newer cars less prone to leaks and explosions. The new regulations also mandate an enhanced braking system on those "rolling pipelines" to shorten the stopping time and distance in order to reduce the chances of collisions and derailments. {Metro News}
