39-year-old James Nelson of Onarga was taken into custody Thursday after holding police at bay following a traffic stop in Onarga. Iroquois County Sheriff's Police say it was a traffic stop on W. Lincoln Avenue about 11 am for a suspended registration. Nelson was a front-seat passenger, police knowing Nelson was wanted on an Iroquois County outstanding felony warrant for Aggravated Fleeing & Eluding.
In a Sheriff Department news release, police reported Nelson refused to exit the vehicle when requested. When police attempted to take Nelson into custody, he reached into the backseat, producing an object he claimed was a bomb and threatened to detonate it. Police said Nelson then fled on foot into a nearby residence.
Authorities reported the perimeter was secured and backup was called in, including an Illinois Bom Squad and the Kankakee County Emergency Response Team. A search led to the discovery of Nelson hiding in the attic. He was taken into custody and treated for injuries at IMH, the injuries sustained during the arrest. Police said the alleged explosive device was rendered safe.
Nelson is charged with Possession of Explosives and Aggravated Battery of a Police officer.
Illinois State Police and Conservation Police assisted at the scene.
