Today is Operation Lifesaver Day. It's designed to highlight the importance of safety at railroad crossings. June 24 finds the Emergency Notification System Sign Awareness Day reinforcing the importance of blue and white signs posted at rail crossings across the country. The blue & white signs are to be used to report non-emergency safety issues at given locations, specifically to educate motorists about malfunctioning warning gates and signals.
Illinois has the second largest rail system of any state in the US with approximately 14,553 rail crossings and bridges statewide. The network is operated by 91 railroads or industries providing rail service to ports and industrial facilities across the state.
