A 29-year-old man – police say is homeless – is in custody charged with robbing three banks in Champaign County. Darryll Coleman may be linked to bank robberies in Vermilion County and in Indiana.

Paxton Police also say employees of two banks in Paxton played big roles in helping police apprehend Coleman.
Coleman was arrested by Champaign police on Friday.

That was three days after Paxton police were made aware of Coleman's presence at two banks in Paxton and found suspicious evidence in Coleman's possession.

On December 1st, employees of the Farmers-Merchants National Bank in Paxton alerted police about a "suspicious person" inside the bank.

The First National Bank of Paxton also called police to tell them that the suspicious man had returned to their building, wearing a different outfit, and was standing outside the bank again.

Coleman was questioned by Paxton authorities, his vehicle searched, and police found wads of cash and evidence, including a handgun and a map.
But police released Coleman despite the suspicious evidence found.

However, Rantoul investigators then contacted police in Ford County saying that they believed the man matched the description of a suspect in an armed bank robbery November 10 in Rantoul. And after that, Paxton Police Chief Bob Bane received word that the same man also was linked to a holdup in Danville, two in Champaign and three in Indiana.

Coleman remains at the Champaign County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
