More than 20 fire departments battled brush fires in Pembroke Township Monday and Tuesday. Kankakee County officials reported fire crews from Will County and northwest Indiana joined several area departments all day trying to bring the wind-blown flames under control. Two firemen and a citizen were treated for minor injuries.
Manteno Fire Chief Scott O'Brien said neighbors were fighting the fires to protect their own property. Some houses were destroyed. The flames spread across a four-mile area.
The NWS had issued 'red flag' alerts. advising people not to burn. Winds were clocked at 25-30 mph.
