Peoria man charged in murder, dismemberment of Rankin man

Vermilion County Sheriff's Police report a Peoria man has been charged in the 2024 murder of a Rankin resident.  56-year-old Johnny Gibson was jailed in Danville and charged with murder, dismembering a human body and concealing a homicidal death. The State's Attorney's Office filed a court request to hold him in custody and not allow a pretrial release.
Frank Lucas of Rankin was reported missing July 11, 2024. Investigators said in a press release Lucas likely "died of homicidal means" and developed Gibson, a former neighbor, as a suspect.
On Oct. 20, investigators located human remains — believed to be Lucas — in rural Champaign County. Identification of the remains is pending Illinois State Police Crime Lab results.  Anyone with info about the case can reach out to Vermilion County investigators.
