A Lafayette, IN pilot was taken to an Indianapolis hospital after crashing his plane near the Jasper County Airport Wednesday morning. Rensselaer Police and Fire responded to the crash around 7 am just outside Rensselaer. 911 calls alerted emergency responders. Officers say they found the plane behind a business along State Route 114.
The pilot, 47-year-old Matthew Jonkman of Lafayette was alone in the plane. Officials report he suffered burns and head injuries. He was taken to a Lafayette hospital then transferred to Indianapolis. Emergency responders said Jonkman was enroute to Rensselaer at the time of the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
