Senate Bill 667 or the Way Forward Act has been signed and approved by Governor J.B. Pritzker. The law restricts local law enforcement from working with ICE and closes immigrant detainment centers.
The bill was filed by Senator Omar Aquino in an effort to protect immigrants from local law enforcement.
Fred Tsao of the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights said that this legislation is the result of a decade of work.
The new legislation also would do away with detainment facilities in the state of Illinois. State Rep Jeff Keicher said that with this law Illinois is at risk of letting criminals into the state.
The Way Forward Act has been signed and approved by Gov. Pritzker and goes into effect immediately.
