State Senator Chris Balkema is introducing legislation to simplify property tax relief for senior citizens across Illinois. Senate Bill 2701 would eliminate annual reapplication requirements for the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption. Under current law, some counties require seniors to regularly verify eligibility to continue receiving the benefit.
The proposal would allow qualifying seniors who have already been approved for the exemption to automatically retain it in future years, reducing paperwork and administrative burdens. The measure builds on local efforts, including in Grundy County, where steps have been taken to ease the process for senior residents.
If enacted, the bill aims to create a more consistent statewide system while reducing strain on both residents and local government offices.
SB 2701 has been assigned to the Senate Revenue Committee for further consideration.
