RECORD COLD- -- the NWS reports

When the mercury fell below zero early Monday morning, some areas of central Illinois saw record-breaking cold.

The snow on the ground made all the difference for the cold front that came from the Dakotas, all the way through central Illinois. Springfield saw little snow cover and saw lows in the teens, if not twenties.

But meteorologist Chuck Schaffer with the National Weather Service in Lincoln says other places nearby got much colder.
“Coldest temps we saw was -1 at Lincoln and -2 at Paxton; that was the coldest ever recorded at those sites for the date in April and the month,” Schaffer said.

Schaffer says the cold snap is likely to continue through Wednesday and into the weekend.
