Sixteen cars on a CSX freight train derailed in Rensselaer, IN last night. No injuries were reported, but several homes were evacuated as a precaution.
Police say the cars left the tracks near the intersection of Scott and Walnut streets; that’s near U.S. 231. Police report the train was carrying corn syrup and petroleum distillates.
The precautionary evacuation was carried out, but no leaks were found. Residents were allowed back in their omes around 1 am today.
Jasper County Sheriff’s Police reported the U.S. 231 crossing was still blocked as of 5:30 a.m., but other crossings were open. Police say CSX crews are working hard to keep hazardous material contained.
People are asked to avoid the area until cleanup is complete
