State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst is actively working toward solutions to see the campgrounds at Kankakee River State Park reopen following the budget impasse.

“Kankakee River State Park is a staple and an asset to our district. The campgrounds attract people from miles around and are a beautiful and popular destination for camping, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, and enjoying nature,” Rep. Parkhurst said.

Kankakee River State Park has two campgrounds Chippewa and Potawatomi—both are currently closed.

“I listened to and heard the people around the 79th tell me how important the state park is to them and their family traditions. I am working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to determine what is needed to see the state park campgrounds reopen as soon as possible,” Rep. Parkhurst continued.

The Chippewa campground required a water pump replacement and is expected to reopen this spring. The Potawatomi campground has a Capital Development Board (CDB) project which requires completion prior to reopening. IDNR indicated the project may take a number of years. The FY 2018 budget did not appropriate funds for project, but Rep. Parkhurst will request the necessary funds be appropriated for the FY 2019 budget.
