The Central Illinois Green Club is hosting its "Ride the River" event Saturday. Proceeds from entry fees benefit area FFA organizations.
"Ride the River" was initiated in 2008 to raise money to create a scholarship fund for Kankakee Community College agriculture and horticulture students, adding to that in 2010 and 2012 and switching to FFA funding this year.
For more information about the event or the Green Club, contact secretary Nancy Evans at 815-545-0726.
Vintage tractor enthusiasts from the surrounding area participate in the annual event. Upwards of 120 tractors will gather at the Kanakee County Fairgrounds at 8 am, then follow the river and ride along a river road route to Momence and back.
The tractors route is east to the Iroquois River road, then south to Sugar Island bridge over the Iroquois River. They then head back north to Aroma Park.
From Aroma Park, the tractors take Sandbar Road and Eagle Island Road to Momence, where they will stop for lunch at Island Park for lunch. The route then moves on River Road South out of Momence, past South Shore Golf Course and across Illinois Route 17, then west to Boy Scout Road, to Birchwood Lane and back to the Aroma Park campground for an afternoon break about 1 p.m. The tractors then take Waldron Road to Kankakee and arrive at Cobb Park, before heading back at the fairgrounds at 4:30 pm.
