Four juveniles, wading in the Vermilion River near the Forest Glen Preserve over the weekend, were swept off their feet by the swift current. All four were rescued after a three-hour episode.
The Vermilion County Sheriff’s department responded. Reports indicated the youths were in the river clinging to tree roots.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Department, the Dive Team/Swift Water Rescue Unit, All-Terrain Search and Rescue Unit, and Conservation officers were all dispatched. Three of the juveniles managed to safely get to the other side of the river.
A fourth juvenile was discovered a mile and a half downstream, still in the water clinging to a tree. All four of the juveniles were recovered safely, and suffered only minor scrapes and bruises.
