Kankakee officials are saying the River Street bridge is expected to re-open today (Thursday) while efforts continue to improve the structure. Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong said engineers have deemed the structure is sound, despite the debris having fallen from the bridge earlier in the week. Both lanes of traffic under the bridge were closed when the debris fell Monday night.
City engineers and the Canadian National Railroad are working on making the needed repairs. The railroad owns the bridge. Maintenance will continue over the next few weeks.
