Route 49 crash, man rescued from burning semi

The driver of a semi tractor trailer was rescued from the cab of his truck Monday, just before it was destroyed by fire near Potomac.

Illinois State Police report the truck left Illinois route 49, north of U.S. route 136. It appeared the driver veered off the north-bound route and struck a concrete ditch culvert. Police reported the semi became dislodged from the trailer. The driver was able to be pulled out by passer-bys.

The driver was taken to a Champaign hospital for treatment of injuries. His name was not immediately released. State police reported the proper use of the seat belt may have saved the man's life.
