A 2023 survey of rural challenges revealed that inactive downtowns are an ongoing problem for rural communities in Illinois, but an economic development expert says it doesn't have to be that way.>>>>
A recent webinar by the University of Illinois Extension offered strategies that communities can utilize to develop vibrant downtown areas. Pam Schallhorn, University of Illinois Extension specialist in Community and Economic Development, says trying to lure retail stores to the downtown areas may be unrealistic, so communities should go a different routeā¦.
"The arts, education and entertainment are avenues that should be pursued," Scahallhorn said. "Too often, too much emphasis is put on historic retention but it's not approached the right way. And trying to attract retail stores may be unrealistic, Retail, she said, looks for activity and if the people and activity isn't tbhere, retail shys away.
Schallhorn said several Illinois communities have revitalized their downtowns, including Greenville, LaSalle, Ottawa and Centralia.
