Semi driver killed in crash on Route 17

Two semi tractor-trailers crashed Thursday on Route 17 near Grant Park, killing one of the drivers. The accident happened at 12:40 pm at North Bull Creek Road (17170E Road).

{Kankakee County has recorded two fatalities in as many days}

Illinois State Police District 21 at Ashkum identified the driver who died as 26-year-old Jose Cardenas of Bridgeview (IL). He was dead at the scene, according to the Kankakee County Coroner’s office.

Police report the driver of an eastbound semi on Illinois 17 crossed the center line and collided with a westbound semi. The victim was in the westbound unit. The other driver was transported to Riverside Medical Center with injuries.

A second person has died from injuries in a 3-vehicle crash on I-57 near Manteno Wednesday.

24-year-old Michelle Crowe of Boca Raton, FLA died from her injuries. She was a passenger in a car sandwiched between two semi’s in a construction zone. The woman had been air-lifted from the scene. She died at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.

26-year-old Jake Jake Hemrick of Tampa, Fa., was killed in the crash. Hemrick was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car is hospitalized at Presence St. Mary’s in Kankakee.

Two truck drivers were treated for injuries. One of the driver’s was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
