IL property tax bill called bandage avoiding ‘bigger problem’

Illinois Senator Chris Balkema is calling his bill a “Band-Aid,” and urges Democrats to look at the “bigger problem” when it comes to property tax relief. 

Senate Bill 2086 seeks to raise the income limit for the Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption to $75,000 for taxable year 2025.  Senator  Balkema is the sponsor...

"The people on fixed income finds the high property tax hurting the most. This provides some relief," Balkema points out.

Balkema says more needs to done. Under current law seniors can apply for their assessed value to be frozen, but the income parameters are “low,”...

"This picks at parts of the population that is most vulnerable," he says, and "that's not fair either. We have to fix the problem." 

The Revenue committee has to address the bill by April 11.
