Senator Balkema, Reps. Bunting, Haas Speak to Protect Parental Rights and Homeschooling Freedom

Senator Chris Balkema recently joined thousands of concerned parents and children at a rally at the Capitol, to stand together in opposition to House Bill 2827, a proposal that would impose unnecessary regulations on homeschooling and threaten parental rights in Illinois.

“These regulations strip away the flexibility that allows Illinois families to successfully homeschool,” said Senator Balkema. “Parents know their children best, and this bill undermines their right to choose the educational path that’s best for them. I cannot support legislation that diminishes their ability to do so.”

Rep. Jackie Haas said "Illinois lawmakers should be empowering parents about education decisions, not adding more hurdles and regulation.  With a laundry list of issues we're facing, home and private schooling is not one of them."

Rep. Jason Bunting has reached out to ask constituents to voice their concerns about the homeschooling.

HB 2827 aims to expand government control over homeschooling by requiring extensive paperwork, testing, and curriculum mandates, weakening the ability of parents to make educational decisions tailored to their children's individual needs.

“This bill is a textbook example of government overreach, creating red tape and obstacles for families who have chosen homeschooling as the best option for their children,” said Senator Balkema. “This is about the future of our families, and I will stand firm to protect their rights.”

HB 2827 passed the House Education Policy Committee by an 8-4 vote, despite strong opposition from many lawmakers and passionate parents. The bill now moves to the House floor for a full vote. If it passes, it will move to the Senate before reaching the Governor’s desk.
