Sheldon man arrested on traffic, assault and weapons charges

A simple traffic stop for speeding in Watseka Monday turned into quite an episode.  A 22-year-old Sheldon man  is now jailed for several offenses after refusing to cooperate with police.

Eugene Westbrook is jailed for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, criminal damage to state property, possession of cannabis, resisting an officer, aggravated assault and fleeing & alluding. He was jailed in Iroquois County.

A traffic stop was initiated for speeding in the 800-block of E. Walnut Street just before 6:30 pm.  Police stopped the vehicle at a local business, but Westbrook is alleged to have refused to comply with the officer. Westbrook then entered the business, again ignoring the officer's commands. When the officer attempted to handcuff Westbrook, the suspect then ran and knocked over a display in the business.

The officer attempted to deploy his taser, hitting Westbrook's vehicle door.  Westbrook then entered his vehicle, reversed and hit the squaf car twice. A police dispatch then alerted Iroquois County deputies who were able to take Westbrook into custody north of Watseka. That's when officers located the weapon and cannabis.
