Too often jail personnel find themselves on the sour end of negative publicity when caring for jail inmates. Despite the self-harm many inmates bring on for themselves, it's the Jailer/Correctional Officer blames for injury or deaths. But in this case, Three hired-officers rescued an inmate who was in the act of harming himself.
Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said an October incident inside the Jerome Combs Detention Center found three Corrections officers provide life-saving skills to rescue the inmate from self-harm. Downey brought all three officers to the County Board meeting (Tuesday) to allow the elected-board see what the officers are all about.
Jacqueline Harcar, Damient Maldonado and Cameron Douglas were observed in video-surveillance inside the jail, detaining and pulling an inmate to safety.
Despite the negative talk and social media rhetoric, Sheriff Downey said correctional officers care about the health and well-being of inmates. "They're trained to care and exemplify professionalism and we want to share what they did...too often we hear the bad and never the good that happens," Downey told the Board members. "This video shows the professionalism, dedication and hard work on the job."
The three officers received lifesaving pins, letters of commendation and applause from the Board.
